On the 23rd October, Twyford was proud to celebrate Black History Month with our Showcase which adopted this year’s national theme ‘Standing Firm in Power and Pride'.
In today’s world, stories are powerful tools that shape how we understand our past, present, and future, and this year’s theme is a powerful tribute to the strength, resilience and unwavering commitment to progress that defines the Black community globally. The evening honoured generations of resilience, cultural strength and identity through song, dance, and some powerful poems and spoken word pieces that were written by our students themselves.
The sold-out event was a true example of student leadership in action, with 6th form students Naomi, Kayann, Kelechi and Thiyani choreographing the 10-minute dance number, writing the compere’s script and also performing their own poetry. The showcase featured over 60 students, a live student band and lighting designed by our Student Head of AV, Sam.
We were also proud to award the Joycelyn Poole Award for the second year. Named after a member of staff, the award celebrates students who have demonstrated exceptional commitment and dedication to our school community, and this year was awarded to Naomi and Kayann, who had perfectly demonstrated their dedication and commitment in their direction of the evening’s Showcase.
