On Saturday 16th May, members of the Ada Lovelace Jazz Orchestra, Ada Lovelace Jazz Quintet, Twyford Big Band and Twyford Year 12 Jazz Band performed as part of the Chiswick Jazz festival at St Peter’s Church (Acton Green).
This was a really special opportunity for the bands to perform alongside established professional jazz soloists and ensembles who regularly perform at the 606 Jazz Club in Chelsea, in the welcoming atmosphere of a community festival. Ada’s Jazz Orchestra, conducted by Mr Laing, featured musicians from Year 7 – 11, played Birk’s Works, Cornbread and Can’t Turn You Loose, with improvised solos from most of the band. Father David’s Jazz Quintet entertained us with their interpretations of standards Chameleon, Song For My Father and Autumn Leaves. The Twyford Big Band, conducted by our Headteacher Mr Bennett, then provided polished accounts of Count Basie’s Flight of the Foo Birds, and String of Pearls and Little Brown Jug (made famous by the Glenn Miller band), followed by Year 12 jazz band ‘ATM’ , who impressed with their virtuosic solos in a range of pieces they had arranged and composed themselves.
We are already looking forward to performing again next year!
